Some Information About Acupuncture...
ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture is a major part of Oriental Medicine,
a complete system that is used to diagnose and treat illness, prevent disease
and improve well-being. In itself, it is effective for physical, psychological
and emotional problems. Acupuncture originated in China more than 2,500 years
ago and, due to its proven effectiveness has been embraced throughout the world
since that time.
HOW ACUPUNCTURE WORKS
Recently science has determined that human beings are
complex bioelectric systems. This understanding has been the foundation of
acupuncture practice for several thousand years. Energy circulates throughout
the body along well-defined pathways. Points on the skin along these pathways
are energetically connected to specific organs, body structures, and systems. If
this energy circulation is disrupted, optimum function is affected and this
results in pain or illness. Acupuncture points are stimulated to balance the
circulation of energy, which influence the health of the entire being.
TYPES OF TREATMENT
Treatment with acupuncture needles is the most commonly
used technique. However, acupuncturist or Doctor of Oriental Medicine may
utilize other modalities such as individualized herbal prescriptions, dietary
modifications, moxibustion (a form of heat therapy), lifestyle counseling,
various styles of massage, movement techniques and specific therapeutic
exercises.
HOW ACUPUNCTURE FEELS
Prior to their first treatment, many people do not
believe that acupuncture can be painless. Different sensations such as warmth or
pressure may be felt, but the energetic sensation differs from pain. People
often comment that the feeling is unfamiliar but pleasant and relaxing.
Acupuncture needles are very fine, about the size of a thick hair. They are
solid and nothing is injected through them. Over the centuries, refined needle
insertion techniques have been developed which enable the skilled acupuncturist
to place a needle with little or no sensation.
BENEFITS
Since acupuncture promotes the body's natural healing
ability, most conditions can be corrected or improved. Oriental Medicine is a
comprehensive system of preventive health care and health maintenance. The
effectiveness of acupuncture and Oriental Medicine is well documented and
extends far beyond the conception that it is only useful for chronic pain
management or as an analgesic.
WHAT CONDITIONS DOES ACUPUNCTURE TREAT?
The World Health Organization (WHO)
recognizes acupuncture and traditional Oriental medicine's ability to treat more
than 43 common disorders including:
- Gastrointestinal disorders, such as food
allergies, peptic ulcer, chronic diarrhea, constipation, indigestion,
gastrointestinal weakness, anorexia and gastritis;
- Urogenital disorders, including stress
incontinence, urinary tract infections, and sexual dysfunction;
- Gynecological disorders, such as irregular,
heavy, or painful menstruation, infertility in women and men, and
premenstrual syndrome (PMS);
- Respiratory disorders, such as emphysema,
sinusitis, asthma, allergies and bronchitis;
- Disorders of the bones, muscles, joints and
nervous system, such as arthritis, migraine headaches, neuralgia, insomnia,
dizziness and low back, neck and shoulder pain;
- Circulatory disorders, such as hypertension,
angina pectoris, arteriosclerosis and anemia;
- Emotional and psychological disorders,
including depression and anxiety;
- Addictions, such as alcohol, nicotine and
drugs;
- Eye, ear, nose and throat disorders;
- Supportive therapy for other chronic and
painful debilitating disorders.
IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE? DOES IT HURT?
In the hands of a comprehensively trained
acupuncturist, your safety is assured. Acupuncture needles are sterile and are
either disposable or autoclaved between treatments. If you have a preference,
you should discuss the type of needles to be used with your practitioner.
Undergoing an acupuncture treatment bears no
resemblance to the feeling of receiving an injection, since the main source of
pain from injections is the larger diameter, hollow needle and the medication
being forced into the tissue by pressure. Acupuncture needles are very fine and
flexible, about the diameter of a human hair. In most cases, insertion by a
skilled practitioner is performed without discomfort. You may experience a sense
of heaviness or electricity in the area of insertion. Most patients find the
treatments very relaxing and many fall asleep during treatment. In some cases,
your practitioner may also recommend herbs, or dietary, exercise or lifestyle
changes.
